Bafana winger signs for new European team
Bafana Bafana winger Mihlali Mayambela has signed for Cyprus League outfit Omonia Nicosia on a deal that runs until May 2028.
This comes after the 29-year-old mutually parted ways with Aris Limassol earlier on Thursday, making him eligible to sign for any team of his choice.
Mayambela had joined Limassol in July 2022, and went on to lift the Cyprus League and the Cyprus Super Cup, including featuring in the UEFA Europa League.
He made a total of 125 appearances for the club, while chipping in with 19 goals and 15 assists during his spell in Limassol.
Now, the versatile player is set for a new chapter with Cypriot giants Omonia, who have won the championship 21 times, with their last triumph dating back to the 2020/21 campaign.
Mayambela’s new team currently sits atop the log standings as they are five points clear of second-placed AEK Lanarca, who have amassed 40 points in 19 games.
The South African international, who has two goals in 16 Bafana caps, will share a dressing room with former Manchester City striker Stevan Jovetic.
Notably, Mayambela was previously linked with a sensational move to Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs in the Betway Premiership, but a deal never materialized.
