Villamar war von der US-Staatsanwaltschaft in Abwesenheit unter anderem wegen Drogenschmuggels und Verschw\u00f6rung angeklagt worden. Seine Bande soll mit dem mexikanischen Sinaloa-Kartell zusammenarbeiten und Drogenhandelsrouten zwischen S\u00fcdamerika und den USA kontrollieren. In Ecuador war die Bandengewalt zuletzt eskaliert.
