It is impossible to imagine this happening in most other countries. The German Head of State, Bundespr\u00e4sident Frank-Walter Steinmeier has written a fulsome tribute, and publicly offered condolences to the widow of musician and composer Klaus Doldinger who died on Thursday 16 October 2025 at the age of 89. In a Press Release from the Office of the President dated 18 October 2025, Steinmeier writes (*):<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cOur country has lost a great German jazz legend. Saxophonist\/composer Klaus Doldinger was an outstanding musician with seemingly inexhaustible energy and creativity, especially in the field of improvisation, working with countless leading international jazz musicians around the world. During his unique career spanning several decades, he had a decisive influence on jazz in Germany with his extraordinary talent.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Klaus Doldinger\u2019s musical range was enormous, stretching from latin and swing to jazz rock. With the influential band \u2018Passport\u2019, which he founded in 1971, he experimented with a wide variety of styles and discovered whole new worlds of sound that, without him, would have remained closed to us. Klaus Doldinger\u2019s music, characterised by artistic excellence, freedom and dedication, captured the hearts of a large audience with its particular expressiveness. Klaus Doldinger kept performing into old age, and those who were lucky enough to have the experience of seeing him live will never forget it.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As a composer of film music, he also made an incomparable contribution to the evolution of German film and television. The \u2018Tatort\u2019 melody he composed in 1970, the theme tunes for the series \u2018Liebling Kreuzberg\u2019 and \u2018Ein Fall f\u00fcr Zwei\u2019, as well as the legendary music for films such as \u2018Das Boot\u2019 and \u2018Die unendliche Geschichte\u2019 have long been ingrained in our cultural memory.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Klaus Doldinger, honoured with the Federal Cross of Merit in 1978 and 2002, dedicated his life to music. He gave our country great art and unforgettable melodies. We owe Klaus Doldinger a great deal and will remember him as an important musician.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bundespr\u00e4sident Frank-Walter Steinmeier hat der Frau des Musikers und Komponisten Klaus Doldinger kondoliert. Der Bundespr\u00e4sident schreibt:<\/p>\n

Unser Land hat eine gro\u00dfe deutsche Jazz-Legende verloren. Der Saxofonist und Komponist Klaus Doldinger ar ein herausragender Musiker mit schier unersch\u00f6pflicher Energie und Kreativit\u00e4t, gerade im Bereich der Improvisation, der mit unz\u00e4hligen international f\u00fchrenden Jazzmusikern auf der ganzen Welt zusammengearbeitet hat. W\u00e4hrend seines einzigartigen Wirkens \u00fcber Jahrzehnte hinweg hat er den Jazz in Deutschland mit seinem au\u00dfergew\u00f6hnlichen Talent entscheidend beeinflusst und gepr\u00e4gt.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Die musikalische Bandbreite Klaus Doldingers war enorm, sie reichte von Latin Swing bis zum Jazzrock. Mit der von ihm 1971 gegr\u00fcndeten, einflussreichen Band \u201ePassport\u201c probierte er unterschiedlichste Stile aus und entdeckte ganz neue Klangwelten, die uns ohne ihn verschlossen geblieben w\u00e4ren. Klaus Doldingers Musik, von k\u00fcnstlerischer Exzellenz, Freiheit und Hingabe gepr\u00e4gt, hat durch ihre besondere Ausdruckskraft die Herzen eines gro\u00dfen Publikums erobert. Bis ins hohe Alter hinein stand\u00a0 Klaus Doldinger auf der B\u00fchne, und wer das Gl\u00fcck hatte, ihn live zu erleben, wird das nie vergessen.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Auch als Komponist von Filmmusik leistete er einen unvergleichlichen Beitrag zur deutschen Film- und Fernsehgeschichte.
