It was a Sunday evening, and she had just put in an extra shift at her workplace. At that time she thought of her life as fulfilling, but all that changed in the few hours she spent in the lift – her enthusiasm for everything she was doing simply evaporated. When she was finally freed from the lift, she realised that something had to change. From then on, Dominique Fils-Aimé began singing and writing her own songs. The Montreal-based artist is now on her fifth album: ‘My World Is The Sun’ was released a month ago and stands a good chance of reaching a wide audience with its blend of roots, Afro-world and soul, delicate, transparent arrangements and emphatically narrative vocals.

Dominique Fils-Aimé likes to organise her songs into larger units. Her first three albums were a trilogy dedicated to role models of African-American jazz singing; her second trilogy, with a dedication to nature, has now arrived at its core themes: creativity, love, freedom… She is setting off on her “Sunshine Tour” round Europe and this Munich concert was the first of the tour. It turned out to be a very special combination of space and art, because the Elektra Tonquartier at the Bergson Kunstkraftwerk is one of Europe’s most modern concert halls. With its immersive sound system, the acoustic can simulate virtually any space. Impressive, yes, but also with the inherent temptation for people to make use of rather more technology than is strictly necessary.

There is already a tendency for the songs from “My World Is The Sun” to be somewhat over-elaborate. In the studio that can be dealt with. Things like complex vocal arrangements can be balanced out in the mix. But on stage, there is a risk that the music can lose its focus. Reverberant spaces with the acoustics of cathedrals allow voices—often multiplied via loops—to flow into one another. When the full band joins in, the wave of sound crashing towards the audience can all be a bit too much. With ballad-like passages, however, there can be a virtuous circle as the melodic element creates connection. In such moments, Dominique Fils-Aimé can unleash her voice which is charismatic, soulful and commanding. On the other hand, the whole band at once can easily be too much, too full, too overwhelming.

So, for a good hour, one keeps hoping for more of those subtle moments, more of the gentle passages when one can catch one’s breath, right up to the delicately arranged cover of Francis Cabrel’s “Je t’aimais, je t’aime, je t’aimerai”, with which the singer bids farewell to the evening accompanied only by keyboard sounds. Conclusion: Dominique Fils-Aimé creates emotionally powerful and multi-layered music. Her quintet supports her with plenty of vigour and musical precision. However, the arrangements of her “Sunshine Tour” programme are too packed to work to their full potential when performed live. Her message of love and humanity does come across, although unfortunately, by the time it reaches the audience, it has often suffered from blurring.

Die Lieder von „My World Is The Sun“ neigen an sich schon zur Überfülle.

For Dominique Fils-Aimé, getting stuck in a lift ten years ago turned out to be a life-changer.
