The supervisory board of UkrOboronProm (Ukrainian Defense Industry), Ukraine’s state-owned defense conglomerate, announced an open, transparent competition for the company’s chief executive position on Sept. 1.
Candidate selection and preliminary evaluation will be handled by the Ukrainian office of Amrop Partnership, an international executive search firm, UkrOboronProm announced on Telegram.
Amrop Partnership was selected following an open procurement process. The firm specializes in executive search and leadership consulting.
Amrop Ukraine began searching for potential candidates on Sept. 1.
Ukroboronprom CEO Herman Smetanin resigned on July 14. He had led the company for a second term starting in August 2025. Before that, Smetanin had previously headed UkrOboronProm from June 2023 to September 2024, and in the interim served as Ukraine’s minister of strategic industries.
At the time, Smetanin did not give a specific reason for his resignation, but it came after an ammunition depot explosion at a UkrOboronProm facility in Vyshneve, in Kyiv Oblast.
The heads of two state-owned enterprises were dismissed over violations of legal requirements and safety rules for ammunition storage. It was later reported that a court ordered pre-trial detention for senior UkrOboronProm managers suspected of negligence in connection with the ammunition detonation case.
Vyshneve was the hardest-hit town in Kyiv Oblast during a Russian attack overnight into July 6. The strikes and resulting fires destroyed buildings along five streets and damaged dozens of homes and infrastructure facilities.
Eight people were reported killed and 29 injured, and about 600 people were temporarily evacuated due to the risk of secondary detonations.
