Diehl Defence has unveiled the IRIS-T SLS MK 4, the next step in the development of its highly mobile air defense system.

According to experts from the Belgian defense center Army Recognition Group (AR), at the ILA 2026 international air show in Berlin, Diehl Defence presented the IRIS-T SLS MK 4 — a next-generation short-range air defense system designed to strengthen the protection of maneuvering forces and critical infrastructure against drones, helicopters, aircraft, and other low-altitude threats.

According to defense market analysts, the system presented at the air show increases battlefield survivability by combining detection, command, and engagement capabilities on a single highly mobile platform capable of rapid deployment.

Meanwhile, the developers themselves, Diehl Defence GmbH & Co. KG, headquartered in the western German town of Überlingen, emphasize in a dedicated release on their official website that the IRIS-T SLS MK4 is a further development of the combat-proven IRIS-T SLS system, directly hinting at their support for Ukraine’s fight against the russian invasion.

Diehl Defence representatives provide more details about their latest development: the system is the fourth generation of the IRIS-T SLS. It has an effective firing range of 12 km and a coverage altitude of up to 6 km.

The system combines a radar, a command-and-control (C2) system, and a launcher, including actuators, on a single vehicle, making it a true “all-in-one” solution. Thanks to its high mobility and future capability to engage targets while on the move, it provides an extremely rapid response time.

Due to its compact design, the air defense system can be relocated within a very short time. The system itself is independent of the vehicle, providing maximum flexibility for different customer requirements.

The SLS system is already fully integrated into Diehl Defence’s multilayered air defense concept. Further development and modernization to the MK4 version consistently meet NATO standards and operational requirements, including an eightfold increase in payload capacity and the resulting improvement in combat effectiveness.

The IRIS-T missile remains the core element of Diehl Defence’s ground-based air defense, including in the proven SLS system. As an air defense system with advanced capabilities, the IRIS-T SLS MK4 represents high performance in dynamic threat scenarios.

Meanwhile, experts from the defense portal Defence Industry Europe, citing the system’s designers, note that the missile’s hardware remains unchanged, and it is expected to eventually provide the capability to “fire on the move.”

This capability will allow the missile to be launched while the vehicle is moving. The system can also integrate additional actuators, including Diehl Defence’s CICADA unmanned guided missile system or a combat station.

Meanwhile, defense industry market researchers from the aforementioned Belgian AR center emphasize that a key feature of the new system is its high degree of automation. This reduces the need for operating personnel while simultaneously accelerating response times when targets are detected.

Automated detection of air threats, tracking, combat planning, and firing sequences allow crews to respond rapidly to new challenges. This capability is particularly important against modern aerial targets such as cruise missiles and attack drones, where engagement windows can be measured in seconds rather than minutes.

The transition to the MK 4 standard also provides a significant increase in firepower. The system now carries eight ready-to-launch missiles. This effectively doubles its engagement capacity compared with previous configurations.

This improvement is particularly relevant in scenarios involving swarms of aerial targets, such as drones and loitering munitions.

The modernization was carried out in accordance with NATO standards and operational requirements, reflecting the Alliance’s growing emphasis on integrated and mobile air defense capabilities. As European militaries continue to strengthen their defenses against increasingly sophisticated aerial threats, highly mobile systems capable of rapid deployment and seamless integration into broader command networks are becoming strategic priorities.
