class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/rare-earths?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">rare earths<\/a> and other strategic minerals essential for advanced weapons development \u2013 made the province indispensable to China\u2019s push for \u201cdefence industry mobilisation\u201d, they said, referring to efforts to secure reliable domestic resource supplies for arms production.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Their study was published in the academic journal Defence Industry Conversion in China, which is supervised by the national defence technology authority and aims to encourage provided an \u201ceffective solution\u201d to China\u2019s so-called Malacca dilemma.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">This refers to Beijing\u2019s heavy reliance on the Strait of Malacca for trade, a vulnerability that adversaries could exploit during periods of high tension.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cYunnan acts as a land-based lifeline that ensures the supply of mineral raw materials required for the defence industry in wartime or extreme scenarios remains free from maritime power constraints, making it the most reliable and controllable strategic guarantee corridor for critical mineral resources,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The study proposed measures to use Yunnan\u2019s advantages in strategic minerals to build rapid-response capabilities for
