{"id":4033,"date":"2026-07-21T09:50:08","date_gmt":"2026-07-21T09:50:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/defence\/4033\/"},"modified":"2026-07-21T09:50:08","modified_gmt":"2026-07-21T09:50:08","slug":"anduril-archer-unveil-defence-variant-of-autonomous-vtol-platform","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/defence\/4033\/","title":{"rendered":"Anduril &#038; Archer Unveil Defence Variant of Autonomous VTOL Platform"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Anduril and Archer Aviation have unveiled the defence variant of their brand-new jointly-developed autonomous VTOL aircraft platform, Thunder.<\/p>\n<p>A Group 5 autonomous attack rotorcraft specifically designed to multiply the combat power of current and next-generation crewed attack and assault aircraft, the unit has been built to serve both defence and commercial applications.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6099779\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/defence\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/inline-1.jpg\" alt=\"The commercial variant of Anduril and Archer\u2019s jointly-developed aircraft platform\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1274\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>The commercial variant of Anduril and Archer\u2019s jointly-developed aircraft platform<\/p>\n<p>\u00a9 Archer<\/p>\n<p>The new unit aims to perform as a \u2018new class\u2019 of autonomous aircraft with improved speed, range, payload and operating costs, with Archer stating that it will announce its first commercial partners for the platform later this week.<\/p>\n<p>Thunder builds on a dual-use platform developed by Archer and Anduril, and utilises a series hybrid-electric powertrain, enabling significant range and endurance whilst maintaining the necessary precision to closely optimise power through the full range of flight conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Dual tilrotors vary RPM in order to maintain efficiency across flight regimes, reducing overall power demand and fuel burn in cruise and minimising acoustic signatures to enhance survivability at low-altitude ingress. The configuration of the tilrotors aims to combine vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) with efficient wingborne cruise, allowing for runway-independent operations from austere locations without the range constraints of traditional rotorcraft.<\/p>\n<p>Shane Arnott, SVP of Maneuver Dominance at Anduril, said:<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__quote-text\">From raw performance to producibility, harnessing the best technologies from the commercial eVTOL market for defense is central to how Thunder will deliver operational value to our customers.
