programme.<\/p>\n<p>India&#8217;s\u00a0Reliance\u00a0Industries\u00a0and\u00a0Britain&#8217;s\u00a0Rolls-Royce\u00a0announced\u00a0have\u00a0plans\u00a0to\u00a0jointly\u00a0design\u00a0and\u00a0manufacture\u00a0engines\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0south\u00a0Asian\u00a0country&#8217;s\u00a0multirole\u00a0indigenous\u00a0fighter\u00a0jet\u00a0programme.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Reliance\u00a0Industries\u00a0Limited,\u00a0India&#8217;s\u00a0largest\u00a0private\u00a0sector\u00a0company,\u00a0has\u00a0been\u00a0expanding\u00a0into\u00a0defence\u00a0production\u00a0in\u00a0military\u00a0aerospace\u00a0and\u00a0advanced\u00a0munitions\u00a0to\u00a0support\u00a0Prime\u00a0Minister\u00a0Narendra\u00a0Modi&#8217;s\u00a0&#8220;Make\u00a0in\u00a0India&#8221;\u00a0initiative.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>New\u00a0Delhi,\u00a0one\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0world&#8217;s\u00a0largest\u00a0arms\u00a0importers,\u00a0has\u00a0made\u00a0the\u00a0modernisation\u00a0of\u00a0its\u00a0defence\u00a0forces\u00a0a\u00a0top\u00a0priority,\u00a0with\u00a0repeated\u00a0pushes\u00a0to\u00a0boost\u00a0domestic\u00a0production.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rolls-Royce\u00a0builds\u00a0engines\u00a0for\u00a0commercial\u00a0use\u00a0by\u00a0the\u00a0world&#8217;s\u00a0biggest\u00a0aircraft\u00a0manufacturers\u00a0Airbus\u00a0and\u00a0Boeing,\u00a0as\u00a0well\u00a0as\u00a0for\u00a0fighter\u00a0jets.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0pair\u00a0of\u00a0industry\u00a0giants\u00a0issued\u00a0a\u00a0joint\u00a0statement\u00a0announcing\u00a0&#8220;their\u00a0strategic\u00a0intent\u00a0to\u00a0partner\u00a0and\u00a0offer\u00a0capabilities\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0design,\u00a0development,\u00a0manufacturing\u00a0and\u00a0delivery\u00a0of\u00a0a\u00a0sovereign\u00a0indigenous\u00a0combat\u00a0engine\u00a0for\u00a0India&#8217;s\u00a0Advanced\u00a0Medium\u00a0Combat\u00a0Aircraft\u00a0(AMCA)\u00a0programme&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0statement\u00a0did\u00a0not\u00a0reveal\u00a0the\u00a0scale\u00a0of\u00a0investment\u00a0the\u00a0two\u00a0companies\u00a0will\u00a0make\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0partnership.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0AMCA\u00a0is\u00a0India&#8217;s\u00a0flagship\u00a0fifth-generation\u00a0stealth\u00a0multirole\u00a0fighter\u00a0jet,\u00a0developed\u00a0locally\u00a0for\u00a0its\u00a0air\u00a0force.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0partnership\u00a0&#8220;marks\u00a0a\u00a0major\u00a0milestone\u00a0towards\u00a0building\u00a0a\u00a0robust,\u00a0self-reliant\u00a0aerospace\u00a0ecosystem\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0country,&#8221;\u00a0the\u00a0statement\u00a0quoted\u00a0Rolls-Royce\u00a0chief\u00a0executive\u00a0Tufan\u00a0Erginbilgic\u00a0as\u00a0saying.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Together,\u00a0we\u00a0aim\u00a0to\u00a0build\u00a0an\u00a0enduring\u00a0national\u00a0capability\u00a0that\u00a0can\u00a0make\u00a0India\u00a0self-reliant\u00a0and,\u00a0over\u00a0time,\u00a0globally\u00a0competitive\u00a0in\u00a0advanced\u00a0propulsion\u00a0technologies,&#8221;\u00a0said\u00a0Reliance\u00a0Executive\u00a0Director\u00a0Anant\u00a0Ambani.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>India\u00a0under\u00a0Modi\u00a0has\u00a0prioritised\u00a0modernisation\u00a0of\u00a0its\u00a0military\u00a0&#8220;driven\u00a0by\u00a0a\u00a0self-reliant\u00a0and\u00a0future-ready\u00a0defence\u00a0sector&#8221;,\u00a0Defence\u00a0Minister\u00a0Rajnath\u00a0Singh\u00a0told\u00a0soldiers\u00a0on\u00a0Friday\u00a0on\u00a0the\u00a0eve\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0country&#8217;s\u00a080th\u00a0independence\u00a0day.<\/p>\n<p>Last\u00a0month\u00a0India\u00a0approved\u00a0the\u00a0purchase\u00a0of\u00a0a\u00a0range\u00a0of\u00a0military\u00a0equipment\u00a0worth\u00a0$5.46bn,\u00a0including\u00a0missiles,\u00a0electronic\u00a0warfare\u00a0systems\u00a0and\u00a0suicide\u00a0drones.New\u00a0Delhi\u00a0over\u00a0the\u00a0last\u00a0decade\u00a0has\u00a0sought\u00a0to\u00a0reduce\u00a0its\u00a0dependence\u00a0on\u00a0Russia,\u00a0its\u00a0traditional\u00a0main\u00a0supplier\u00a0of\u00a0military\u00a0equipment,\u00a0turning\u00a0to\u00a0other\u00a0countries\u00a0like\u00a0the\u00a0US\u00a0and\u00a0France,\u00a0as\u00a0well\u00a0as\u00a0boosting\u00a0domestic\u00a0production.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>India\u00a0is\u00a0also\u00a0rapidly\u00a0modernising\u00a0its\u00a0navy\u00a0with\u00a0domestic\u00a0production\u00a0of\u00a0ships\u00a0and\u00a0submarines.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Earlier\u00a0this\u00a0year\u00a0the\u00a0government\u00a0approved\u00a0the\u00a0purchase\u00a0of\u00a0$39bn\u00a0worth\u00a0of\u00a0defence\u00a0equipment,\u00a0including\u00a0Rafale\u00a0jets\u00a0from\u00a0France.India&#8217;s\u00a0current\u00a0defence\u00a0budget\u00a0is\u00a0$85bn.<\/p>\n<p>Related
