{"id":7040,"date":"2026-08-18T15:34:10","date_gmt":"2026-08-18T15:34:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/defence\/7040\/"},"modified":"2026-08-18T15:34:10","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T15:34:10","slug":"australia-japan-test-co-developed-high-energy-laser","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/defence\/7040\/","title":{"rendered":"Australia, Japan test co-developed high-energy laser"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MELBOURNE \u2014 Australia and Japan have<a href=\"https:\/\/www.minister.defence.gov.au\/media-releases\/2026-08-18\/successful-trial-high-energy-laser-marks-deepening-australia-japan-defence-collaboration\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> successfully conducted field trials of a co-developed high-energy laser<\/a> that could see applications on board ground vehicles and naval vessels, Australia\u2019s Minister for Defence Industry Pat Conroy said in a release today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The laser, dubbed Project Boobook after an Australian species of owl, was a collaborative effort between Australia\u2019s Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG), Japan\u2019s Mitsubishi Electric Australia (MEA) and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (MELCO). The dates of the trial were unspecified in the release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe laser system draws on more than 20 years of research and development by DSTG to deliver a cutting-edge technology with the potential to enhance surveillance capability,\u201d according to the release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the first time the defense industries of both countries have undertaken a joint development, and Conroy said it was \u201ca practical example of the growing defence industrial partnership between Australia and Japan, as well as the opportunities that partnership creates for both nations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MEA will be investing 70 million Australian dollars ($49.8 million USD) towards establishing new facilities \u201cin preparation for large-scale manufacturing within Australia,\u201d per the release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new facility at Rydalmere in the western suburbs of Australia\u2019s largest city Sydney will support \u201cfuture manufacturing opportunities in Australia and strengthening access to advanced Mitsubishi Electric defence technologies for the Australian Defence Force into the future,\u201d according to the release.
