{"id":8796,"date":"2026-09-03T10:09:10","date_gmt":"2026-09-03T10:09:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/defence\/8796\/"},"modified":"2026-09-03T10:09:10","modified_gmt":"2026-09-03T10:09:10","slug":"military-production-cant-be-the-answer-critics-oppose-volkswagens-defence-plan-with-israel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/defence\/8796\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Military production can&#8217;t be the answer\u2019: Critics oppose Volkswagen\u2019s defence plan with Israel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p textalign=\"left\" class=\"\">In the case of Israeli defence company Rafael, however, he said the war in Gaza raises additional concerns.<\/p>\n<p textalign=\"left\" class=\"\">&#8220;Given the massive human rights violations and serious allegations regarding breaches of international law in connection with the war in Gaza, there must be particularly rigorous scrutiny,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p textalign=\"left\" class=\"\">&#8220;The guiding principle for public investment must be that human rights and international law are non-negotiable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p textalign=\"left\" class=\"\">&#8216;City of Peace&#8217; pushes back<\/p>\n<p textalign=\"left\" class=\"\">The debate has particular resonance in Osnabruck, a city that has long promoted itself as a &#8220;City of Peace&#8221; because of its role in the negotiations that led to the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, ending the Thirty Years&#8217; War.<\/p>\n<p textalign=\"left\" class=\"\">The prospect of military production at the Volkswagen plant has sparked repeated protests in recent months, bringing peace activists, anti-war groups and local initiatives onto the streets.<\/p>\n<p textalign=\"left\" class=\"\">The Osnabruck Peace Initiative argues that Lower Saxony should use any public money earmarked for the plant to support a socially responsible and environmentally sustainable transition rather than subsidise weapons production.<\/p>\n<p textalign=\"left\" class=\"\">&#8220;Production for an Israeli arms company amounts to de facto support for the wars the state of Israel is waging against the Palestinians, Lebanon and Iran,&#8221; Marie Dominique Guyard, spokesperson for the initiative, told Anadolu.<\/p>\n<p><a data-link-preview=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.trtworld.com\/article\/76e2dd8c7595\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" dir=\"ltr\" class=\"relative flex w-full px-4 py-3 flex-col items-start gap-6 rounded bg-[#F1F1F1] border-l-0 transition-all duration-200 ease-in-out box-border mb-4 hover:bg-[#F9F9F9] hover:shadow-[0_4px_6px_-1px_rgba(0,0,0,0.1),0_-4px_6px_-1px_rgba(0,0,0,0.06),4px_0_6px_-1px_rgba(0,0,0,0.06)] focus:bg-[#F9F9F9] focus:shadow-[0_4px_6px_-1px_rgba(0,0,0,0.1),0_-4px_6px_-1px_rgba(0,0,0,0.06),4px_0_6px_-1px_rgba(0,0,0,0.06)] before:content-[&quot;&quot;] before:absolute before:left-0 before:top-0 before:bottom-0 before:w-[3px] before:rounded-l-md before:bg-[#01ABD9]\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"flex justify-center items-center rounded-md !w-20 !h-20 aspect-square flex-shrink-0 sm:rounded md:rounded-md lg:!w-[84px] lg:!h-[84px] lg:rounded xl:rounded-md\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/defence\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/a5e29874-21ea-4626-8f3e-2f8687d91fbe-1783683315286.JPG\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Related<\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p textalign=\"left\" class=\"\">&#8220;Defence equipment for the Iron Dome plays a role in Israel&#8217;s aggressive, offensive military activities, as it provides the protective shield enabling Israel to act aggressively toward its neighbours.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p textalign=\"left\" class=\"\">Speaking on behalf of the Osnabruck Peace Initiative, Guyard said the group&#8217;s position is also informed by international legal proceedings concerning Israel&#8217;s conduct.<\/p>\n<p textalign=\"left\" class=\"\">She pointed to a 2024 International Court of Justice advisory opinion that found Israel&#8217;s continued presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory unlawful and said states must not provide aid or assistance in maintaining the situation created by that presence.<\/p>\n<p textalign=\"left\" class=\"\">She cited International Criminal Court arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant on war crimes and findings by a UN commission of inquiry and Amnesty International accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p textalign=\"left\" class=\"\">But she also pointed to Osnabruck&#8217;s own history to explain the depth of local opposition.<\/p>\n<p textalign=\"left\" class=\"\">The city was repeatedly bombed during World War II, when it was home to arms-related industry.
