{"id":8798,"date":"2026-09-03T10:10:37","date_gmt":"2026-09-03T10:10:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/defence\/8798\/"},"modified":"2026-09-03T10:10:37","modified_gmt":"2026-09-03T10:10:37","slug":"government-to-unlock-growth-through-defence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/defence\/8798\/","title":{"rendered":"Government to unlock growth through defence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>            The UK defence industry is set to benefit as the Government explores new ways to unlock private investment to strengthen military readiness, drive innovation and deliver economic growth across the country.<\/p>\n<p>The Ministry of Defence will examine how private capital can be more effectively leveraged during a meeting of the Defence Investors\u2019 Advisory Group (DIAG), which brings together senior figures from UK banking, venture capital and strategic finance to advise ministers on defence investment priorities.<\/p>\n<p>The Defence Secretary has also announced that DIAG will be placed on a permanent footing and expanded, deepening collaboration between government and the UK\u2019s world\u2011leading financial services sector.<\/p>\n<p>As part of this enhanced partnership, industry professionals will join the MOD through a new Defence Finance \u201cZig\u2011Zag\u201d secondment programme, embedding private\u2011sector expertise directly into defence decision\u2011making and financial planning.<\/p>\n<p>The programme is designed to ensure the MOD can draw on cutting\u2011edge investment knowledge as it accelerates defence capability and supports growth in the sector.<\/p>\n<p>The announcements come alongside the largest sustained increase in defence spending since the end of the Cold War, with UK defence spend set to rise to 2.6% of GDP from 2027.<\/p>\n<p>Ministers say the increased budget provides both the scale and certainty needed to attract long\u2011term private investment into defence\u2011related innovation, manufacturing and infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>HM Treasury and UK Government Investments will support the MOD\u2019s initial \u201csprint\u201d to identify where private capital can most effectively be used to stimulate innovation and growth across the defence supply chain.<\/p>\n<p>The work builds on wider government efforts to reshape the relationship between defence and the private sector, removing obstacles that have historically limited private investment in defence technologies.<\/p>\n<p>Recent initiatives include a first\u2011of\u2011its\u2011kind meeting between the Defence Secretary and venture capital firms, as well as a Dragon\u2019s Den\u2011style pitching event that allowed pioneering defence companies to present innovations directly to major investors.<\/p>\n<p>These initiatives are designed to create clearer routes to funding for emerging technologies, from advanced manufacturing to next\u2011generation defence systems.<\/p>\n<p>The Government has also launched a bespoke \u00a320 million defence innovation fund, offering accelerated contracts to small, innovative British start\u2011ups that have limited or no prior business with the MOD.<\/p>\n<p>The fund is intended to help promising firms scale quickly, test new capabilities and attract follow\u2011on private investment, as the search begins for the UK\u2019s next defence \u201cunicorn\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>John Healey, Defence Secretary, said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a more dangerous world,\u00a0our national security is the guarantor of our economic security and investment confidence.
