The U.S. Marine Corps deployed Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 533 to Japan on Sept. 5, continuing its rotation of F-35B Lightning II units through the Indo-Pacific. Known as the \u201cHawks,\u201d VMFA-533 is based at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, South Carolina.<\/p>\n
The squadron will operate from Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni under the Unit Deployment Program and become part of Marine Aircraft Group 12, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing. VMFA-533 will replace VMFA-232, the F-35B squadron currently serving in the rotational role.<\/p>\n
During the deployment, the Hawks will conduct aviation operations and maintain combat readiness across the region. The unit will support the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing\u2019s ability to provide task-organized aviation forces capable of operating from naval and expeditionary locations.<\/p>\n
The Unit Deployment Program gives units based in the continental United States operational experience in the Indo-Pacific. Continuous and overlapping deployments allow the Marine Corps to maintain a recurring presence while rotating squadrons and personnel through the region.<\/p>\n
The Marine Corps said the deployment would strengthen operational readiness and support regional stability.
