Vestas has been awarded an order to supply and install wind turbines for the 26MW Kapuni Wind Farm in Taranaki, New Zealand, a project that will link renewable electricity generation with green hydrogen production.
Turbine delivery is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2026 (Q1 2026). Commissioning of the wind farm is planned for Q2 2027.
The project is being developed by Hiringa Energy, which is leading a partnership that includes Balance Agri-Nutrients, Todd, PKW and New Zealand’s Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. Vestas will deliver four V162-6.4MW EnVentus wind turbines and provide a 20-year service agreement to support long-term operation.

Kapuni is one of New Zealand’s first large-scale wind projects designed to directly support green hydrogen production connected to the national grid. Electricity generated by the wind farm is intended to help supply Hiringa Energy’s hydrogen network, which targets emission reductions across transport, industry, agriculture and energy use.
Hiringa Energy co-founder and chairperson Catherine Clennett said the project relies on dependable renewable generation to underpin hydrogen supply, highlighting Vestas’ experience in New Zealand as a key factor. Vestas, meanwhile, described the project as an opportunity to convert the country’s strong wind resources into multiple clean energy uses including hydrogen.
Once operational, the Kapuni Wind Farm is expected to contribute to New Zealand’s broader decarbonisation goals while strengthening energy security by diversifying renewable generation and supporting emerging clean energy industries.
