Jun 6, 2026
The pharmaceutical sector is defined by intense rivalry and a constant push for new treatments. This dynamic is clearly illustrated by the contest between Novo Nordisk (NYSE: NVO) and Eli Lilly (NYSE: LLY) in the emerging GLP-1 weight-loss market. Although Eli Lilly currently appears to have the upper hand, Novo Nordisk‘s oral version of Wegovy is exceeding initial expectations. This development could make the stock an attractive long-term option for investors seeking dividends.
Novo Nordisk’s Early Missteps
Novo Nordisk was the first company to bring a GLP-1 weight-loss medication to market. However, it struggled to manufacture enough of its Wegovy injection to satisfy demand. This shortfall allowed compounding pharmacies to enter the U.S. market, which limited Novo Nordisk’s potential for growth. It also created a significant opportunity for competitor Eli Lilly when it introduced its own GLP-1 treatments, Mounjaro and Zepbound.
Eli Lilly’s drugs also demonstrated greater effectiveness, leading to strong financial results for that company while Novo Nordisk worked to catch up. Investors responded by selling shares of Novo Nordisk and purchasing Eli Lilly. The performance gap has been substantial, with Novo Nordisk’s stock declining by 40% over the past three years, while Eli Lilly’s shares have risen by more than 150%.
A Turning Point in 2026
A significant shift occurred at the beginning of 2026, when Novo Nordisk launched a tablet form of Wegovy. Many patients prefer pills to injections, which broadens the potential customer base for GLP-1 drugs. This has been confirmed by the company’s experience, as the pill has achieved faster growth than the injectable version. Furthermore, the pill does not appear to be reducing sales of the injection, indicating that the overall GLP-1 market is expanding. The pill’s performance has surpassed the company’s own projections, generating 1.3 million prescriptions in the first quarter alone. One month later, when Novo Nordisk reported its first-quarter earnings, the prescription count had jumped to two million.
Challenges Ahead for Novo Nordisk
Despite this success, Novo Nordisk has cautioned investors that 2026 will be a difficult year. The company is losing patent protection for Wegovy in India, which is putting pressure on its sales in that large market. Additionally, Novo Nordisk has agreed to reduce prices in the U.S., which is also affecting its revenue. Management anticipates that higher sales volume will eventually compensate for lower prices, especially as the Wegovy pill attracts more patients to the GLP-1 category. Given the pill’s early performance, this scenario appears increasingly plausible.
