On Sunday in Stockholm, Canadian 800m star Marco Arop’s season kicked off with a surprise result.
While Arop seemed to be in command as he entered the final stretch of the race, 17-year-old American Cooper Lutkenhaus charged past him in the closing metres, winning in 1:42.70. Arop finished second in 1:43.11, with Algeria’s Slimane Moula taking third in 1:43.41.

Lutkenhaus’s hyped Diamond League debut
Lutkenhaus arrived in Stockholm surrounded by plenty of buzz, but besting Arop in his first outdoor 800m race of the year was unexpected. At 17, Lutkenhaus became the youngest individual world champion in track and field history in March, when he won the 800m at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Toruń, Poland.
Even after his record-setting performances, it’s a significant escalation to move from winning a championship race indoors to beating one of the best 800m runners in history in a Diamond League field.
A Canadian star
Arop is the reigning Olympic silver medallist and the 2023 world champion. His personal best of 1:41.20 ranks him fourth on the all-time list, and he holds both the Canadian record and the North American record in the event. He took bronze at the 2025 World Athletics Championships.
While Lutkenhaus’s performance may have been a shock, there’s no need for concern from Arop’s perspective. Lutkenhaus was fresh off his indoor world title; the Stockholm race was Arop’s first of the year, and in the past he has used early-season races to build toward major championship goals later in the summer.
