The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB), a UK government organisation, is making preliminary inquiries into the incident, which happened on board the Dover-registered roll-on, roll-off ferry, Delft Seaways, on May 12.
Its list of current investigations states a preliminary assessment is taking place after a “passenger injury during vehicle discharge from a UK-registered roll-on/roll-off passenger ferry in Dunkirk, France, resulting in one fatality”.
MAIB inspectors have yet to decide whether they will formally investigate the incident, a spokesperson told KentOnline.
The authority said it would not be providing any further information surrounding the incident.
A DFDS spokesperson said: “We are deeply saddened to confirm that a tragic accident took place in Dunkerque on May 12 on board Delft Seaways.
“An investigation has been initiated to establish the circumstances, and we are cooperating fully with the authorities and have taken all appropriate measures to support those affected.
“Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to the family.
“Out of respect for those affected, no further details will be shared.”
It has not yet been confirmed exactly how the incident occurred and what authorities are investigating.
It is also not known whether the passenger is a British national.
Delft Seaways is one of three sister ships – including Dover Seaways and Dunkerque Seaways – built in 2005 for the DFDS line.
They are of Scandinavian design and have multiple dining venues, a cafe, play areas, a shop, a private lounge and facilities for commercial drivers.
The ferries have a capacity of 1,000 passengers, 250 cars and a cruising speed of 20.5 knots – capable of making the cross-Channel route from Dover to Dunkerque in 1 hour and 45 minutes.
