At Wednesday’s Oslo Bislett Games meeting, American teen phenom Cooper Lutkenhaus continued his remarkable undefeated streak on the Diamond League stage, narrowly holding off reigning 800m Olympic and world champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi in a world-leading 1:42.08.
Wanyonyi clocked 1:42.09 for second, well ahead of Olympic and world medallist Marco Arop, who claimed third in 1:43.33.
Lutkenhaus is now two-for-two for Diamond League wins; he won his debut at the Stockholm meeting on Saturday, also beating Arop, becoming the youngest Diamond League winner in history.
His performance on Wednesday betters his North American U20 record by nearly two-tenths of a second. He now sits just 0.35 seconds off the World U20 record of 1:41.73 held by Botswana’s Nijel Amos. His time also ties the 14th-fastest 800m mark ever.
Tebogo back in top form
The men’s 200m featured a highly-anticipated matchup between Botswana’s Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo and Australian sprint prodigy Gout Gout, who made his Diamond League debut. Tebogo took a dominant win in a season’s best of 19.84 seconds, nearly two-tenths of a second ahead of the field. In an unexpected turn of events, Gout fell back to sixth in 20.60 seconds, his slowest mark this year.
Cheruiyot takes first Diamond League win since 2021
The men’s “Dream Mile” saw a photo finish between U.S. Olympic 1,500m medallist Yared Nuguse and Kenya’s 2019 world champion Timothy Cheruiyot, with both men recording 3:48.21. Cheruiyot ultimately claimed the win, marking his first Diamond League victory since 2021.
For Nuguse, it marked the first loss of the 2026 outdoor season. He’d already won the Rabat Diamond League 1,500m last month and entered Oslo fresh off another win in Stockholm.
