Two people rescued, two cats killed in Berlin house fire
At the scene, crews saw a two-story home fully engulfed in flames with people trapped in the rear yard. Once crews put out the flames, they entered the home to address remaining hotspots and perform an overhaul.
A person was inside the home during the fire, and a good Samaritan who stopped to help also became trapped due to the intense heat, fire officials said.
The two people were safely removed from the home. They were evaluated and eventually released by EMS, fire officials said.
Two of the three cats that were in the home during the fire died, according to fire officials.
No other injuries were reported.
The Berlin Fire Marshals Office, along with the State Fire Marshals Office, investigated the cause of the fire and determined it likely originated at the front of the home under or near a portion of the deck where a dry landscape mulch was found. Investigators said high temperatures may have contributed to the ignition.
