WARSAW, N.C. (WITN) – Crews are working to reopen busy roads in Duplin County after a tanker carrying a hazardous chemical overturned Tuesday.
In an update around 5 a.m. today, NC Emergency Management said the tanker was uprighted.
Officials shared in that update that crews with the Highway Patrol and DOT were working to reopen I-40 West.
Highway 24 remains closed so crews can finish offloading the product to another tanker truck, according to officials.
DriveNC.gov shows I-40 is back open as of 6 a.m., but the ramp from I-40 West to Highway 24 is still closed.
Both roads were shut down Tuesday after a tanker carrying nitrobenzene overturned in Warsaw near the I-40 interchange around 11:15 a.m.
The driver had minor injuries, officials said.
Hazmat crews spent hours working to monitor and clean up the chemical. Officials said the chemical is not considered an immediate threat to the public, and a perimeter around the tanker was set up.
