Port of Helsinki Cargo Volume January-May 2026: 5.8M Tonnes, 1.1% Decrease - News and Statistics

The Port of Helsinki reported a total cargo volume of 5.8 million tonnes for the period from January to May, according to a statement from the port authority. This figure represents a 1.1% decrease compared to the same timeframe in the previous year.

Despite the overall decline, unitized cargo—which includes containers, trucks, and trailers—continued its upward trend. The port handled 495,000 unitized cargo units, marking a 4.9% year-on-year increase. Within this category, container traffic measured in TEUs rose by 9.4%, while combined truck and trailer volumes grew by 1.2%. Unitized cargo by weight reached 5.3 million tonnes, an increase of 2.5%.

Breaking down the trade flows, imports totaled 2.3 million tonnes, up 1.8% from the prior year. Exports reached 3.0 million tonnes, a 3.1% increase. Vesa Marttinen, Vice President of Cargo at the Port of Helsinki, attributed the stronger freight volumes to improving economic conditions. He noted that as Finland’s economy begins to recover, unitized cargo traffic is becoming busier.

Marttinen also commented on infrastructure developments, stating that construction work on the Vuosaari Harbour road tunnel has caused only minor disruptions, with most cargo continuing to use the port normally. The port’s primary cargo routes connect Finland to Estonia, Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium.

Passenger traffic remained largely stable during the first five months of the year. The port recorded 3.1 million passengers, a slight 0.5% decline year on year. Traffic on the route to Stockholm increased by 1.4%, while the Helsinki-Travemünde route saw a 9.6% rise.

International cruise activity also strengthened. Helsinki recorded 17 cruise calls carrying 44,000 passengers, an increase of 31.9%. Additionally, the port expects to welcome 15 turnaround cruise ships this season after a multi-year break.
