According to the sheriff’s office, Catarino was allegedly having inappropriate conversations with a 17-year-old student with disabilities, while working as an aide in the high school.
Deputies said the school district notified them immediately after they were made aware of the reported communication between the two.
“Upon receiving this information, district administration immediately initiated an investigation in cooperation with local law enforcement, notified the student’s parent/guardian, and took immediate action to address the matter,” school officials said.
Deputies charged Catarino with first-degree endangering the welfare of an incompetent or physically disabled person.
According to the district, she has since resigned from her position and is no longer employed at the district.
“The district is treating this matter with the utmost seriousness and will continue to follow all appropriate legal and administrative procedures as the investigation moves forward,” school officials wrote. “While we cannot comment further, we remain deeply committed to maintaining a safe, secure learning environment for all students.”
Deputies said Catarino is scheduled to reappear in the Amsterdam Town Court for later proceedings.
