A rehabilitation and sports medicine centre in Vilnius, Lithuania, has begun offering MBST therapy, a non-invasive method aimed at patients with joint, back or neck pain. According to Hila, the healthcare provider, this form of cellular regenerative magnetic resonance therapy had not previously been available to patients in the Baltic states.
The service is aimed at people seeking more than short-term pain relief and who need a rehabilitation plan assessed by a doctor. Greta Mitrikaitė, a physical medicine and rehabilitation doctor at Hila, says the decision to use the therapy should be made individually, taking into account the diagnosis, the nature of pain, tissue damage and other health conditions.
MBST therapy is being provided at the Hila Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine Centre at Šeimyniškių Street 19C in Vilnius, the Lithuanian capital. The centre says it brings together instrumental diagnostics, modern rehabilitation equipment and a team of physical medicine and rehabilitation doctors working with bone, muscle and nervous system conditions, orthopaedic rehabilitation, sports medicine and regenerative medicine approaches.
For patients in Lithuania and nearby countries, the main practical change is access to this treatment closer to home, without planning treatment abroad, if a doctor considers it appropriate for the patient’s condition. Hila says routine rehabilitation services can also continue at its other branches closer to patients’ homes, including physiotherapy, massage, physical therapy and procedures selected according to a treatment plan.
According to Dr Mitrikaitė, people most often seek therapeutic options because of pain in the knees, hips, shoulders or other joints. Patients with chronic back or neck pain, degenerative spinal changes, tendon or ligament injuries, sports injuries, or those recovering after trauma or surgery may also be assessed.
Physically active people and professional athletes make up a significant share of patients, she says. Physical activity strengthens ligaments, bones and muscles, but heavy loads can contribute to microtrauma, inflammation or prolonged pain. In such cases, recovery quality and timing become especially important.
Hila says MBST may be recommended for joint osteoarthritis, degenerative spinal changes, ligament and tendon injuries, sports injuries and some bone tissue problems such as osteopenia or osteoporosis. It is not presented as a universal procedure for all pain cases. The cause of pain should first be identified.
MBST therapy is based on the same physical principle as magnetic resonance imaging, but its purpose is different. During the procedure, images are not generated. Instead, weaker electromagnetic fields are used with the aim of stimulating biological tissues at molecular level.
Hila says the therapy is directed at specific tissue, such as bone, cartilage or nerve tissue. Conventional rehabilitation methods may help reduce pain, improve circulation and metabolism, support healing and reduce inflammatory processes. MBST is described as seeking to influence biological processes at cellular level and support natural recovery of damaged tissue.
Dr Mitrikaitė says this distinction matters when assessing chronic musculoskeletal disorders. When cartilage, bone tissue or other structures are damaged, pain reduction alone does not necessarily mean that tissue quality or function has improved.
Before starting MBST therapy, patients should have a clear diagnosis, an identified source of pain and a defined treatment goal. During a doctor’s consultation, diagnostic tests may be ordered, and factors such as physical activity, previous injuries, surgeries, medications and coexisting illnesses may be assessed.
Patients may want to ask what outcome can realistically be expected, how many procedures may be needed, how the therapy would be combined with physiotherapy or other rehabilitation measures, when progress should be evaluated and in what cases the procedure would not be suitable.
“Modern people seek not only faster recovery, but also to maintain quality of life for as long as possible — freedom of movement and energy,” Dr Mitrikaitė says. “Patients are becoming more aware, taking a more active interest in their health and using rehabilitation and other integrated measures not only after illness, injury or surgery.”
She also cautions that rehabilitation outcomes may differ. “The effectiveness of rehabilitation treatment can vary, so the decision on MBST therapy should be made after assessing the diagnosis, the nature of pain, tissue damage, physical activity, coexisting illnesses and the patient’s goals,” she says.
