Riga Overpass Load Testing Begins Ahead of October 2026 Completion - News and Statistics

The construction of the overpass connecting Tvaika Street with Kundzinsala in Riga has moved into its concluding stage. On Tuesday, June 16, load testing of the structure commenced, representing a crucial milestone before the infrastructure can be opened for use. This new overpass ranks among the most vital transport infrastructure initiatives in Riga. It is expected to substantially enhance access to Kundzinsala and the industrial areas of the Freeport of Riga, while also delivering safer and more convenient passage for cars, pedestrians, and cyclists.

Viesturs Kleinbergs, who chairs the Riga City Council, emphasized the project’s significance, noting that it will greatly reduce traffic congestion once the necessary work on the Freeport side is finished. He explained that heavy trucks will be routed directly to Kundzinsala, thereby decreasing the volume of freight traffic on city streets. Kleinbergs also characterized the project as a strong demonstration of the city’s dedication to advancing the Freeport of Riga and backing export-oriented, innovative, and high-value-added enterprises.

Ansis Zeltins, the CEO of the Freeport of Riga, pointed out that the Port of Riga’s area on Kundzinsala is undergoing rapid expansion and is becoming the port’s new hub. He stated that in the next few years, at least seven new companies—including cargo terminals, logistics centers, energy firms, and smart manufacturing facilities—will start operations on Kundzinsala. Zeltins stressed that such large-scale development is not feasible without an efficient link to the city’s and the nation’s transport systems. He added that the new overpass will enable the creation of an even more appealing business environment on Kundzinsala, where sustainable energy, modern industry, and smart logistics can all flourish together.

The overpass and trestle structures have been completed, and the final layer of asphalt has been applied to nearly the entire 863.5-meter structure. Since the beginning of June, roughly 2,000 metric tons of asphalt have been used for the top layer. Asphalt paving is still ongoing on Tvaika Street and the new road network surrounding the overpass.

This project establishes a direct route between Tvaika Street, Kundzinsala, and the Freeport of Riga territory. The bridge spans the Sarkandaugava tributary, three railway lines, and an above-ground oil pipeline, and it connects to the previously finished Daudersala Overpass.

Owing to the project’s complexity and certain technical difficulties encountered during construction, the completion deadline has been pushed back to October 8, 2026. The total cost of the project amounts to 82.6 million euros, funded by a state budget grant of 23 million euros, a state budget loan of 59.6 million euros, and 4.5 million euros from the European Union’s Cohesion Fund.
