Volvo Autonomous Solutions and DSV started autonomous freight operations in Texas. The application uses the Volvo VNL Autonomous on freight routes between Dallas and Houston.
The first commercial truckload was hauled using the Volvo VNL Autonomous, which is designed for autonomous driving and integrated with the Aurora Driver. Volvo Autonomous Solutions said it plans to expand autonomous transport operations to additional lanes over time.
Operations Begin Between Dallas and Houston
Volvo Autonomous Solutions is launching autonomous transport services for DSV between Aurora’s terminals in Dallas and Houston. The companies said the service will be integrated into DSV’s existing logistics flows.
During the initial phase, a safety driver will be present in the truck, consistent with Volvo’s current operating mode. The companies said the collaboration is intended to build operational experience while supporting future expansion to additional routes.
“Autonomous driving is moving towards real-world operations,” said Helmut Schweighofer, CEO of DSV Road. “Our collaboration with Volvo in Texas represents a production, depot-to-depot setup. We see clear opportunities to improve safety and driver comfort, help mitigate a growing driver shortage, and unlock better asset utilization through 24/7 operations for the benefit of our customers.”
Integrating Autonomous Transport into Logistics Networks
The collaboration builds on an existing relationship between Volvo and DSV, with a focus on safety, performance, and logistics transformation.
Volvo Autonomous Solutions said working with DSV shows how autonomous transport can be integrated into large-scale logistics networks. The company said it can support efficiency, asset utilization, and supply chain resilience.
“Logistics providers like DSV are an important customer group for Volvo Autonomous Solutions, and DSV is at the forefront of how autonomous transport can be applied in real logistics networks,” said Sasko Cuklev, head of on-road solutions at Volvo Autonomous Solutions. “Starting between Dallas and Houston, we plan to move freight together in a way that supports round-the-clock operations and creates a scalable foundation for adding more lanes over time.”
Autona / freight Supports Deployment
As part of the collaboration, Volvo Autonomous Solutions will deploy its Autona / freight solution for DSV.
Volvo describes Autona / freight as its end-to-end autonomous transport setup, combining the Volvo VNL Autonomous with self-driving technology from partners Aurora and Waabi, along with the systems and services needed to operate and manage autonomous freight at scale.
Volvo Autonomous Solutions said it has logged more than 1 million miles in regional and local freight operations since 2023. The company said that experience supports its ability to scale autonomous freight operations with logistics providers such as DSV.
