Global healthcare company Novo Nordisk has signed a long-term partnership with the 2025 Earthshot Prize winner re.green, embarking on a shared project that will restore forests in the Amazon, delivering carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits.
The two companies have entered a 20-year partnership that will restore an area of 500 hectares of native forest in the Paragominas municipality, located in the Brazilian state of Pará.
According to the project developers, these efforts are expected to generate 87,000 carbon removal credits over the complete period of the contract.
The project implementation will rely on long-term collaborations with rural landowners, who will enter legally binding agreements to maintain the restored forest areas beyond the financing period.
Through this project, re.green and Novo Nordisk intend to revive the selected area with native Amazonian tree species. The initiative will focus on natural regeneration and active planting operations, including sustainable management of native timber across up to 30% of the area.
These activities are expected to restore the ecological functionality in this location, supporting the return of the native biodiversity and contributing to the recovery of vital water resources.
To track project progress, the developers will use a continuous environmental monitoring process that combines field data with remote sensing technologies to assess forest development and the achieved climate and ecological results.
The CDR credits generated via this initiative will be certified with science-based methodologies and guidelines by the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM).
Novo Nordisk and re.green share that the first credit issuance from this ambitious project is expected to come in November 2031, and the developers also intend to have periodic verifications every three years through 2045.
“Brazil is deeply important to us—not only for the patients we serve here, but because the country is home to ecosystems like the Amazon that are vital for climate stability, water security, and biodiversity,” said Dorethe Nielsen, Associate Vice President of Environmental Responsibility at Novo Nordisk.
She added, “This partnership reflects our ambition to address climate and nature impacts through credible, science‑based solutions and long‑term collaboration with trusted local partners.”
