Lego Group Starts Building 116MW Solar Park in Billund – Largest Solar Project to Date - News and Statistics

The Lego Group, a Danish toy manufacturer, has broken ground on a 116MW solar installation in Billund, Denmark, which it identifies as its most extensive solar initiative to date.

This solar facility will feature an 80MW grid connection capacity, with commercial operations slated to start in late 2027. Spanning 100 hectares, the site dedicates 65 hectares to photovoltaic panels, while the remaining 35 hectares are set aside for natural habitats, wetlands, and open landscapes.

Annette Stube, the Lego Group’s chief sustainability officer, noted that the Billund solar park marks a key step toward the company’s global goal of boosting renewable energy capacity and cutting greenhouse gas emissions. She emphasized that the project is carefully planned to foster local biodiversity and offer a pleasant area for community use.

The company reports that the park will produce sufficient electricity to cover all of its Billund operations’ power needs. This initiative is part of Lego’s broader strategy to lower value-chain emissions by 2050, leveraging on-site generation, power purchase agreements, and renewable energy certificates.

Compared to 2025 levels, the Billund solar park is projected to raise Lego’s installed renewable energy capacity by 204%. Public access to adjacent natural areas will be facilitated via a system of paths and boardwalks, and an existing transformer tower on the site will be refurbished into a small museum.

Beyond Denmark, Lego has boosted on-site solar capacity across its manufacturing sites, including Kladno in the Czech Republic and Nyiregyhaza in Hungary, where capacity now surpasses 17MWp. The company is also deploying a 28MWp system at its Chesterfield, Virginia location, its Vietnam factory features rooftop solar arrays, and in Jiaxing, China, Lego has installed 20,000 rooftop panels generating roughly 6GWh of electricity each year.
