Authorities have identified the person who was fatally shot at a Berlin, Massachusetts, shopping center parking lot on Tuesday afternoon, and his suspected killer, who died later amid a police standoff that shut Interstate 495.

The man who was killed at the Highland Commons shopping center was identified as Nicholas Ferreira, a 35-year-old from Haverhill. The suspect was 43-year-old Edward Pyne, from Salem, New Hampshire, the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office said Thursday. 

While officials have said they knew each other, and that Pyne had a criminal history, they still haven’t shared what’s believed to have led to the deadly incidents.

After the shooting at the Highland Commons shopping center, reported about 3:30 p.m., a witness followed the suspect’s car, helping state police follow it, Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early and Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan said hours after the incident.

Berlin police initially said they were investigating a report of an assault, with possible gunshots fired, at Highland Commons, but that there was no ongoing threat to the community. They asked the public to avoid the area amid their investigation, being conducted with Massachusetts State Police.

The incident was reported as an assault in progress about 3:30 p.m., Berlin police said, and while they were headed to the scene, in the northwest part of the parking lot, officers were told that a gun may have been fired.

The victim was shot multiple times, and died despite people at the scene rendering aid, according to district attorneys Joseph Early and Marian Ryan. A witness followed the suspect’s car, helping state police follow it onto I-495, where it was stopped.

The suspect was found dead after a lengthy standoff, in a suspected suicide.
