198 school teams from Vilnius District took part this season in the Lithuanian School Games, a national pupil sports programme involving 59 municipalities and around 150,000 students across Lithuania.
Vilnius District, the municipality surrounding the capital city of Vilnius, did not finish among the top three districts in its overall groups this year. However, several local schools won podium places in individual sports, especially table tennis, volleyball, darts and tourism competitions for younger pupils.
The Lithuanian School Games run throughout the school year and include more than 20 sports. The project has been organised since 2005 by Lithuania’s Ministry of Education, Science and Sport and the Lithuanian National Olympic Committee.
The most active Vilnius District school by number of teams was Kalveliai Stanislav Moniuszko Gymnasium, with 17 teams. Nemenčinė Gediminas Gymnasium sent 16, Pagiriai Gymnasium 14, Nemėžis St Raphael Kalinauskas Gymnasium 12, and Nemenčinė Konstanty Parczewski Gymnasium 11.
These figures show participation, not only sporting strength. Larger team numbers can also reflect school size, available sports clubs and teachers’ capacity to prepare pupils for competitions.
Mickūnai Gymnasium was one of the strongest performers. Its girls’ table tennis team won first place in both the large-school and small-school categories. The boys’ table tennis team won first place among small schools and second place among large schools.
Mickūnai Gymnasium also took third place in girls’ volleyball among small schools and finished third overall in the Lithuanian School Games small-school standings.
Other notable results came in volleyball. Avižieniai Gymnasium’s girls’ team placed second among large schools. Riešė Gymnasium’s boys’ volleyball team won first place among large schools, while the boys’ team from Maišiagala Grand Duke Algirdas Gymnasium won the small-school competition.

Rukainiai Gymnasium pupil Ernest Krukovskij, competing with Devid Matkevičius, won third place in darts. Kyviškės Basic School pupils also performed well in primary-school tourism events: the girls’ team and a primary pupils’ team won first places, while the boys’ team placed third.
Vilnius District Mayor Robert Duchnevič said participation in events of this scale helps promote physical activity, teamwork, responsibility, persistence and respect for sporting values.
