The Brandenburg Gate, Berlin’s most famous landmark, was illuminated in the red, white and blue of the US flag on Saturday evening to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence.
The lighting display began at sunset and was to continue until midnight.
“As a symbol of unity and freedom, the Brandenburg Gate powerfully reflects our shared values on July 4,” Berlin mayor Kai Wegner said in a statement.
“Berlin warmly congratulates the United States on its 250th birthday,” he added.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said the anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence was a cause for celebration for Europe, Germany and especially Berlin.
“The values enshrined in the Declaration of Independence formed the foundation of free and democratic post-war Germany,” Wadephul said.
July 4 is celebrated in the United States as Independence Day.
Representatives of the 13 American colonies formally adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, severing ties with Britain and marking the birth of the United States.
