US President Donald Trump has revived his earlier call for Greenland to be under American control, according to a report published on July 8, 2026. The source for this information is a Euronews article dated the same day.

Trump made the remarks shortly after arriving in Ankara for the annual two-day NATO summit. He stated that Greenland does not help Denmark and that Denmark does not spend money to assist the territory, but described it as important for the United States and noted it is surrounded by Chinese and Russian ships.

The President acknowledged that his previous push for Greenland in January, during which he did not rule out using military force, had damaged relations with NATO allies.

Earlier at the NATO Defence Industry Forum, allies from Canada and Europe pledged approximately EUR50 billion in defence investment under the banner of NATO 3.0. Their plan had been for this year’s summit to proceed without major controversy, with the main message being that the alliance is investing record sums in collective security.

Within an hour of landing in Ankara, Trump had disrupted those hopes. He criticized allies for not joining the war in Iran, saying he was very disappointed with NATO and repeating his claim that Europe and Canada had abandoned the US when it took military action against Iran alongside Israel last February.

Trump also commented on the summit’s location, saying that if it were not held in Turkey, where his friend is a very strong leader, he might not have attended. He referred to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Erdogan welcomed Trump at Bestepe Presidential Palace with cannons, a military band, and a guard of honour. Trump told Erdogan he is a leader respected all over the world and considers him a great friend, adding that it is an honour to be with him and that they will have many good meetings.

Trump also told the press he was considering readmitting Turkey into the US F35 fighter jet programme, describing the plane as the best by far. Turkey’s access to the programme was suspended in 2019 by a Congressional order after Ankara purchased the Russian-made S-400 air defence system, with US lawmakers and security officials citing security concerns that the S-400 could threaten US-made systems.
