Seaspan and Maersk Expand Partnership with $75M Vessel Efficiency Programme - News and Statistics

Seaspan and Maersk are deepening their longstanding alliance through a new vessel efficiency initiative involving 18 container ships under long-term charter to the Danish ocean carrier.

Key upgrade package

The initiative’s core is a retrofit program for four 13,000-TEU vessels, which the companies characterize as among the most substantial upgrade efforts ever carried out on the Seaspan-Maersk chartered fleet. Modifications include installing shaft generators to cut auxiliary engine fuel use, optimizing main engine performance, fitting a new high-efficiency propeller and a pre-swirl device for better propulsion, and incorporating carbon capture readiness to comply with future emissions rules. Lashing bridges will be raised to boost container capacity, and deadweight will be increased to enhance loading capabilities.

Expected benefits

Seaspan projects that the full package will lower slot costs by roughly 10% to 13%, while also improving fuel efficiency and regulatory preparedness. Total spending on completed and planned fleet upgrades across the 18 vessels amounts to around $75 million, with additional initiatives still being developed.

Broader cooperation

In a related development, WattSpan—Seaspan’s maritime technology and engineering joint venture concentrating on vessel performance and decarbonization—has entered into a non-binding memorandum of cooperation with Maersk and COSCO Shipyard. This one-year agreement covers joint work on vessel upgrades, energy efficiency enhancements, and maritime decarbonization technologies.

Dimitrios Panagopoulos, Seaspan’s chief fleet operations officer, noted that the partnership illustrates how practical, high-impact collaboration can drive decarbonization at a large scale.
