As the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP) chairmanship elections approach, the social democrat Vilnius district Mayor Robertas Duchnevičius says he is considering running for the position. According to him, the answer will be ready soon.
“I’m considering it. I’m doing it in discussions with colleagues who may also be considering it. At this stage, it’s not that I would like it, I care about what we will do and what the political structure will look like, where the state will move towards. During that time, I have put enough work into the party structure and other things in general that I wouldn’t be sorry if something goes wrong,” R. Duchnevičius said in an interview with the “Lrytas” portal.
“I’m really considering it and discussing it here. That answer will mature very quickly, no one will manipulate it, it won’t be like this that it will drag on until the elections, after which there will be a withdrawal of candidacy and the like. Everything will be carefully considered before all the technical procedures are completed,” he added.
Earlier, Alytus City Mayor Nerijus Cesiulis, a Social Democrat, said he did not rule out the possibility of considering participating in the LSDP chairman elections to be held in the spring.
At that time, Mindaugas Sinkevičius, who is currently acting as the chairman of the LSDP, said that he would decide by the end of February whether he would seek to continue as the party leader in the party elections to be held in May.
The LSDP chairmanship election will be held in May of this year. Candidates will have to be nominated by the party’s branches. Later, the nominated candidates will have to announce whether they will compete for the position of LSDP leader.
The chairman of the LSDP is elected in general elections for a two-year term.
ELTA reminds that after Gintautas Paluckas resigned from the position of LSDP chairman in July of this year, Jonava District Mayor M. Sinkevičius temporarily took over this position.
