On Wednesday, a dead infant was found by a passerby at the Thermometersiedlung housing estate in Berlin’s Lichterfelde district. According to the police, the baby was only a few hours, at most a day, old. “The umbilical cord was still attached,” a spokesperson for the public prosecutor’s office confirmed to the German Press Agency.

The fire department was alerted shortly after 9:30 am, according to the report. A paramedic pronounced the infant dead at the scene. The public prosecutor’s office has identified a suspect. According to a statement released on Thursday by the public prosecutor’s office, the suspect is a teenager who, based on current investigations, is believed to be the mother.

The public prosecutor’s office expressed suspicion that the teenager may have been experiencing a psychological crisis, therefore, an arrest warrant is not currently planned.
