On July 6, communities across Vilnius District marked Lithuania’s State Day and National Anthem Day with events held at hillforts, manor houses, cultural centres and local gathering places.

Vilnius District Municipality is the local authority covering settlements around Lithuania’s capital, Vilnius. The day is associated with the coronation of King Mindaugas, Lithuania’s only crowned king, and is also marked by the shared singing of the national anthem, “Tautiška giesmė”.

This year, one of the strongest local highlights was in Nemenčinė, where the renewed Nemenčinė hillfort was officially presented to the public during the commemoration.

In Nemenčinė, the State Day and National Anthem Day event focused on the restored Nemenčinė hillfort, a historic outdoor site now returned to community use. Vilnius District Mayor Robert Duchnevič attended the event, greeted participants and spoke about the historic space being brought back to life.

The programme included performances by “Perla”, the folk dance group of the Nemenčinė Cultural Centre, singer Airida and UraganiuS. The musical evening concluded with a concert by Petunija.

In Maišiagala, the celebration began at Houvalt Manor, where Monika Ivaškaitė-Aukštuolė’s painting exhibition “Praėjusio laiko Nirvana” was opened. Residents later joined a hike with the Maišiagala sports community before gathering in the evening on Maišiagala hillfort.

There, the Lithuanian anthem was sung together with soldiers of the Grand Duke Algirdas Infantry Battalion. The programme brought together art, physical activity, a community gathering and the anthem in a historic setting.

In Sudervė, the commemoration included a concert programme and a shared neighbours’ table, where residents brought and shared food. Municipal council member Martynas Motuzas conveyed greetings from Vilnius District Mayor Robert Duchnevič.

At the Rudamina Cultural Centre, the local vocal ensemble “Gija” performed alongside guests from Vilnius, the men’s a cappella ensemble “Quorum”. Council member Henrik Suboč greeted those attending.

A State Day commemoration on Juozapinė Hill near Medininkai, beside the monument to King Mindaugas, has become a local tradition. This year’s event featured works performed by vocal ensembles from the Rudamina Cultural Centre and its branches: “Kolurija”, “Ballada” and “Pagirių dainoriai”. Council member Kristina Boroško delivered a greeting.

The location added symbolic weight to the event because State Day is linked to the coronation of King Mindaugas, making the gathering beside his monument both a concert and an act of historical remembrance.

At Glitiškės Manor, a festive concert featured the group “Żelazny Wilk”. The community also helped prepare for the celebration: children made kites during educational activities, while adults took part in paper-cutting workshops intended to decorate a symbolic crown of King Mindaugas.

In Bukiškis, the folklore ensemble “Verdenė” presented a themed performance titled “The Story of One King: an Anthem Uniting Lithuania”. After the live performance, organisers invited participants to a shared screening of the feature film “Grąžinti nepriklausomybę”.

At 21:00, communities across Vilnius District joined people elsewhere in Lithuania and abroad in singing the national anthem. The initiative “Tautiška giesmė aplink pasaulį” was held for the 18th time.

In Vilnius District, the tradition stood out for the range of places involved: the anthem was heard not only in central squares, but also on hillforts, in manor spaces, cultural centres and community gatherings.
