The man behind the magic, Adrien Bocquier

Want to be part of the biggest bald gathering attempt, play games and vote for your favourite bald contestants? Then Saturday, July 18 is your day. Bald or with hair, everyone is welcome. We talked to Adrien Bocquier, the founder of Berlin Bald Together, about his intentions for this groundbreaking world event right here in Berlin.

Why did you decide to hold the event?

Two reasons: one for fun and one meaningful. At the time I got the idea of organising it, I saw a lot of gatherings of redhead, people dressed as smurfs… but no bald gathering! I thought it would be quite fun to be surrounded by hundreds of bald people! The meaningful reason is that a lot of people losing their hair have a hard time with it. Some feel they don’t look nice without hair and it can affect their self-confidence.

I’ve had alopecia since I was 11 years old and luckily I always lived with it pretty well. However, I know it can be quite tough, especially for women. By organising this, I want to also show kids who’ve lost their hair that’s it’s not a problem to be bald and that they are normal, like everyone else. They will be able to live a good life, have friends, a partner and have their own style even if it can be difficult at times.

By organising a gathering and fun contests, I felt it’s a good way to combine these two reasons. I also thought it would be nice to have people with hair because most people know at least one bald and that we all live together so it would be a fun way to celebrate their baldness!

Is there anything you want to achieve?

The biggest bald gathering! But even if we don’t make it the biggest, it’s fine. The thing I want to achieve the most is people having fun, being together and sharing a good moment with their loved ones and strangers.

Why do you think baldness should be celebrated?

We organise this not to promote baldness, but more to send a message of self-acceptance and to help confidence when needed. Hair? Bald? Both are great! Shiny heads, beautiful hair; like in the world, there is beauty everywhere!
