Some residents in Vilnius District, the municipality surrounding Lithuania’s capital, may not have their municipal waste collected on the usual schedule in the coming days. The municipality says collections in some areas may be delayed by 1-2 days because of disruptions at mechanical biological treatment, or MBT, facilities in Gariūnai.

Residents whose bins have not yet been emptied are asked to leave them by the roadway. Waste collection crews will empty them as soon as the route can be served.

According to Vilnius District Municipality, the delays were caused by operational problems at the MBT facilities in Gariūnai, an area associated with waste processing infrastructure near Vilnius. The facilities are operated by the company Energesman.

Collected municipal waste is taken to these facilities. When trucks have to wait longer to unload, the delay affects the rest of the route. Vehicles may leave later for other scheduled collection points or may be unable to complete the full daily schedule.

The municipality says waiting times at the facilities have decreased, but workers from the Nemenčinė and Nemėžis municipal utility services still have to wait up to 3.5 hours before they can unload collected waste. As a result, not all routes can be completed on time.

The notice says delays are possible in some parts of Vilnius District. It does not provide a list of specific towns or settlements, because the impact depends on which routes are disrupted on a given day by unloading queues.

In practical terms, the problem may affect residents whose waste containers were due to be emptied under the normal schedule but whose collection vehicle did not arrive in time. The municipality asks residents not to move those containers away from the roadside.

Residents are asked to follow these steps:

if a container was not emptied on the scheduled day, leave it by the roadway;
do not move it to another location, so the route crew can find it;
the waste should be collected as soon as the route can be served;
municipal utility staff will also work on Saturday to reduce the accumulated delays.

The municipality says municipal waste collection may be delayed by 1-2 days. This is not a new collection schedule, but a temporary disruption linked to waste acceptance infrastructure.

Some residents may not notice any delay if their route is completed on time. In places where collection vehicles cannot serve all planned stops because of waiting times at Gariūnai, containers may remain unemptied until the next available service opportunity.

The municipality says efforts are being made to clear the accumulated delays as quickly as possible. Saturday work is planned to help restore the normal waste collection rhythm.

Vytautas Vansavičius, director of the Vilnius District municipal administration, said the situation was discussed at a meeting of the municipality’s emergency operations centre. The possibility of proposing that the mayor declare an emergency situation was also discussed.

According to Vansavičius, the situation was also reviewed with the Vilnius County Waste Management Centre and the mayors of municipalities in the Vilnius region. Various measures are being assessed, including a proposal to declare a state-level emergency situation.

“At the same time, we are calculating the losses incurred and looking for solutions that would help restore smooth waste collection as quickly as possible. We understand that this situation is causing inconvenience for residents, so we are making every effort to eliminate it as soon as possible,” Vansavičius said.

The municipality apologised to residents for the temporary inconvenience and said it would provide further information if the situation changes.
