WARSAW, Ind. (WNDU) – Wagon Wheel Center for the Arts in Warsaw is getting a major boost to preserve its past — and prepare for the future.
Indiana is awarding the historic theater a $1.4 million grant to help cover long-planned renovations and upgrades across the campus. Wagon Wheel leaders say the funding is part of a statewide investment in cultural projects, and one of the largest grants is coming to northern Indiana.
“I’m almost in denial. It doesn’t feel real because you have to understand — this was something that has been a dream since way before I joined the organization,” said Sam Engle, Wagon Wheel’s marketing spokesperson.
The money is aimed at modernizing the property while still protecting the theater’s legacy. Kira Lace Hawkins, the organization’s director of outreach and education, said some of the biggest needs are behind-the-scenes — and long overdue.
“This is something that we have been needing for a long time, particularly the capital improvements and infrastructure,” Hawkins said. “Paying attention to electrical and things like that.”

Wagon Wheel says the project focuses on three major improvements:
Renovating the conservatory, where educational programs are heldUpdating the lobby and restroomsCreating a separate entrance to better distinguish the lobby from the theater
Engle said Wagon Wheel has been a staple of entertainment in the region for decades, and the upgrades are designed to help it keep serving the community.
“Wagon Wheel has, since 1956, been the cornerstone of high-quality entertainment,” Engle said. “When something like this has been around for so long, maybe we take it for granted. Now we have this opportunity to upgrade and serve our community even better.”
This summer marks Wagon Wheel’s 70th season. Workers say the improvements will help the theater better serve audiences, students and aspiring performers — while preserving a piece of northern Indiana history for years to come.
