Forsaken by our system, we fear that one?

New Rochelle, N.Y.: Do we really understand what socialism is and accept that it is not a prelude to communism? It amazes me to hear our administration’s constant bleating that socialism, social democracy and any relative form of providing for basic human needs constitutes communism. Nonsense! We simply need to look at the facts to see how much healthier human beings are across all socioeconomic and health indicators in Scandinavian countries.

Norway is a great example of socialism. Some years ago, the Norwegian military discovered a new petroleum reserve close to land, likely in a fjord. Shortly thereafter, the Norwegian chief administrator issued a law indicating that all Norwegian people would receive equal shares of this new discovery. I often wonder why our elected officials do not examine how matters work in the Scandinavian countries when it comes to meeting basic human needs. Our would-be socialist people in the United States should be much more knowledgeable about how things work in countries like Norway.

The will of the people is paramount. Although our constitutional republic contains direct statements as to the duties of government, the will of the people is hardly ever met, especially now that we have a completely selfish executive who will do anything to enrich himself and his family. Look at what is happening now in Gaza and Albania. Enough said.

Pure propaganda

Dublin: I watched your President Trump give his speech on Thursday (“Searching for answers,” July 18). My only comment is that Joseph Goebbels must have been smiling up at Trump during that speech.

Sean Thornton

Diehard demographic

Staten Island: I’m surrounded by diehard Italian-American Trumpers on Staten Island so much so that I asked myself this question: “What do you call these diehard Italian Trumpers?” The obvious answer was MAGA-ronis!

Kenneth Settanni

Fee reversal

Bronx: I wonder if Secretary of State Marco Rubio will resign since he said at the end of June that the Strait of Hormuz should be a free waterway and no country should charge to use it. Now the president wants to charge 20% of the total of any cargo for maintenance. I question how much the president is going to skim off the top.

Test at the top

Bradley Beach, N.J.: Will screening testosterone levels be required for Pentagon management as well as rank and file? Trump’s level would be of interest. Recall that he evaded military service by paying a physician to testify to his bone spurs. Is this a sign of a low testosterone level? If so, should Trump be disqualified from the presidency?

Citizen priority

Commack, L.I.: Why is Mayor Mamdani — or as your newspaper calls him, Zoh, as though friends — so hell-bent on giving illegal immigrants public benefits, yet he lets veterans and the homeless just sit on the sidelines? I don’t get it. Take care of our own first.

John Flanagan

Bad apple

Forest Hills: It was no surprise to me whatsoever when I read about the federal investigation into Anthony Miranda (“FBI raids home of former NYC sheriff Miranda,” July 17). Not only is he a deeply unpleasant individual, but he was appointed by former Mayor Eric Adams, who apparently specialized in appointing fellow thieves to any position to which he was able. Good on our new mayor for kicking Miranda to the curb. Here’s hoping we hear of a federal indictment sooner rather than later.

J.M. Culley

Jailhouse jaunt

Staten Island: Mam-dummie visited detainees in Rikers Island and posed with them to watch the FIFA World Cup. How appropriate for a communist who hates Israel and the U.S.A. to spend time with accused criminals rather than normal Americans. The Dumb-ocrats and our unions have outdone themselves voting for and supporting this disgrace of a human being.

Tony Anastasio

Unheard at hearing

Bronx: At the hearing for the carriage horse ban bill (Intro 943), City Council Speaker Julie Menin left the room before supporters of the carriage horses and their drivers were allowed to speak. The same is true of most of the other Council members who are trying to ban the horses and ruin the lives of the horses and their drivers. Menin couldn’t pay the drivers even the token courtesy of listening to them. I am dismayed.

Respect the process

Savannah, Ga.: I was deeply disappointed by the way the hearing on Intro 943 was conducted. If elected officials are considering legislation that could end a historic industry and affect the lives of drivers, stable workers and the horses they care for, they should remain to hear from everyone involved. It was discouraging to see such an important hearing leave many feeling that their voices didn’t receive the attention they deserved. I urge the New York City Council to allow every stakeholder to be heard. Decisions of this magnitude should be based on careful consideration of all testimony and evidence — not on the appearance that minds were made up before the hearing began or that the views of a few represent the position of the entire Council.

Carrie Daugherty

Unreadable

Hempstead, L.I.: I agree with Voicers Rhonda Castellani and Leo Smith: Make the Baker Street Puzzle answer legible! It was fine but now can’t be deciphered even with a magnifying glass.

Leslie Feldman

Doesn’t take much

St. Petersburg, Fla.: Latest news on Giancarlo Stanton: Severe stomach cramps have caused him to pass wind, resulting in a pulled muscle in the buttocks. Considering past injuries, the Yankees have ordered more bubble wrap and a bland diet!

Bill Barrett

Dangerous individuals

Astoria: The report is in! Submitted by Rikers Remediation Manager Nicholas Deml, it states that Rikers Island is basically a hellhole (“Finally end the scourge of Rikers’ inhumanity,” editorial, July 16). As a retired correction officer, let me remind Deml and all the advocates who cry for the closure of Rikers that it’s a jailhouse that houses criminals who use violence to get their way. Those menaces to society take their street tactics with them behind bars and prey on each other. Should we let them loose so they can continue their ways on the law-abiding public? Are Deml and his followers more concerned about inmates’ safety or the public’s safety? Wake up from your woke world and read the Daily News once in a while so you can be informed of that 3-year-old on the playground who had their brains blown out, or that subway rider who was pushed onto the rails.

Artificial assistance

Ozone Park: I called a major bank to ask a simple inquiry and was “told” that the system now uses AI and I had to rephrase my question. How stupid we have become when customers now have to answer and adjust to a system with no human contacts.
