Repair works are due to begin this week on a 2.2-kilometre section of Lithuania’s A2 Vilnius–Panevėžys motorway. The project will cover kilometres 72.96–75.19 on the right-hand side of the road and is scheduled for completion by the end of November 2026.

The works will be carried out by UAB “Fegda”, a Lithuanian contractor. The contract is worth almost €1.9 million, including VAT.

The routine repair is intended to remove surface damage and extend the road’s service life without fundamentally changing the entire road structure.

Transport Minister Juras Taminskas said reconstruction of viaducts in poor condition was necessary because the Vilnius–Panevėžys road is one of the country’s busiest routes. He said the priority was to make journeys both convenient and safe for all road users.

Traffic will follow a “3+1” arrangement during the works, with two lanes maintained in each direction. A full motorway closure is therefore not planned.

Drivers are advised to choose the correct lane in advance, particularly when planning exits to nearby areas. Temporary restrictions may still lengthen journeys, so road users are encouraged to allow extra time and consider alternative routes where appropriate.

Work is also under way on another A2 section, between kilometres 45.20 and 49.17 on the right-hand side. Repairs there are also scheduled to finish in November.

Via Lietuva, the state-owned company responsible for Lithuania’s national roads, says around 170 kilometres of the country’s roads in the poorest condition are planned for repair in 2026. About 100 kilometres are expected to be completed this year, with the remainder scheduled for 2027.

More than 120 kilometres of roads and 24 bridges and viaducts are planned to be repaired on the A1 Vilnius–Kaunas–Klaipėda and A2 Vilnius–Panevėžys motorways. Via Lietuva’s chief executive Martynas Gedaminskas said investment in these key transport routes should improve road surfaces, traffic safety and the reliability of connections while reducing future maintenance costs.

Via Lietuva manages more than 21,000 kilometres of roads of national importance, over 1,500 bridges, viaducts and tunnels, and more than 2,000 kilometres of pedestrian and cycling paths.
