The women’s national team are returning home to Canada for the first time in over a year.

Canada Soccer announced Tuesday that Casey Stoney’s side will host Denmark for a pair of friendlies in October in the final window before the Concacaf W Championship in November and December — which serves as qualifying for next summer’s World Cup and the following summer’s Olympics.

On October 9 the two teams will meet at Montreal’s Stade Saputo and the rematch will be October 12 in Toronto, with the Montreal game also the team’s annual Pride Celebration Match. It’s the opposite order from the men’s international window a week earlier where Canada will play Chile in Toronto on September 26 and Peru in Montreal on October 3.

While the men’s team hosted the World Cup and several friendlies over the past year, the women’s team have not played at home since June 27, 2025 — when they beat Costa Rica 4-1 in Toronto. In late May and early June last year they hosted Haiti in Winnipeg and Montreal for the Desiree Scott farewell tour, and in April hosted Argentina in Vancouver and Langford, British Columbia.

Their return has been long-awaited, and comes against a top European side. Canada and Denmark have met six times at the senior international level and have three wins each, with Canada winning the most recent meeting 1-0 at the 2017 Algarve Cup.

“Playing a team like Denmark gives us a really good opportunity to test ourselves and put the final pieces in place ahead of the Concacaf W Championship,” Stoney said in a press release. “It’s also a great chance to face a very good European opponent. Denmark is a very organized team with some great offensive threats, so we know these will be two really competitive matches.

“It’s also been more than a year since we’ve played at home, and we’re really looking forward to reconnecting with our supporters in Montréal and Toronto and having them behind us as we build momentum heading into qualifying.”

Team captain Pernille Harder is one of those offensive threats, having scored a national-record 85 goals in 173 appearances. Denmark’s all-time leader in appearances is Katrine Pedersen, who is now head coach of Ottawa Rapid FC in the Northern Super League, but will depart at the end of the season.
