JPMorgan Chase continues its aggressive South Jersey expansion, with four new Chase Bank locations now under development in Washington Township, Deptford, Blackwood and Berlin Township. Three of the projects feature all-new freestanding bank buildings, while the Berlin Township location is a renovation of a former bank branch.

Over the last 24 hours, I stopped by all four sites to check on construction progress, and work is moving ahead at each location. The Washington Township branch, in particular, appears to be nearing completion.

My original core “big three” 42Freeway towns were Deptford, Washington Twp and Gloucester Twp and this is the first time all three of them have had the same retailer developing all-new buildings… and at the same time!

All-new Chase Bank in Washington Township looks close to opening

While everyday banking tasks such as direct deposits, bill payments and mobile check deposits have largely shifted online, Chase believes physical branches still play a key role for customers seeking mortgages, business banking, investment guidance, retirement planning and other financial services that benefit from face-to-face conversations.

As many traditional banks continue closing neighborhood branches, Chase is investing heavily in expanding its retail footprint to capture those customers.

42Freeway has covered several recent Chase openings across South Jersey, including Mullica Hill, Gloucester Township, Glassboro and Woodbury. Last year the bank also opened its first Jersey Shore location in Cape May Court House (Business Journal), and it was recently announced that Chase will be opening in Ocean City and Somers Point (Shore Local)

The expansion is part of JPMorgan Chase’s nationwide growth strategy announced in 2024, which calls for opening more than 500 new branches and hiring approximately 3,500 employees over a three-year period.

Washington Township

Announced in May 2025, the Washington Township Chase branch is being built from the ground up in the Egg Harbor Road ShopRite shopping center, directly in front of the ShopRite Wine & Spirits store.

Although I haven’t found an official opening date, the project looks nearly complete. Through the large front windows I could see interior furnishings already installed, including employee workstations and customer service areas. Landscaping and exterior work also appear to be wrapping up, suggesting this location could welcome customers in the near future.

Berlin Township

The Berlin Township Chase Bank on Route 73 is the only one of these four projects converting an existing bank building rather than constructing a new one, similar to Chase’s earlier Gloucester Township location.

Located beside Planet Fitness and PetSmart near Walmart, the project received township approvals in March, and renovation work is already well underway. Construction fencing surrounds the property as crews rebuild the front façade while upgrading the building and site. Reusing an existing bank allows Chase to move considerably faster than starting with new construction.

Deptford

Deptford’s Chase Bank will be another brand-new freestanding branch located at the front of the rapidly transforming Deptford Town Center, across from Deptford Mall.

The former Bed Bath & Beyond property is being redeveloped with seven new tenants, and Chase will occupy one of the highly visible pad sites near the roadway. Since my last visit, crews have removed the asphalt parking lot, and foundation work appears to be underway. An Aspen Dental office is also planned immediately beside the new bank.

Blackwood / Gloucester Township

The Chase Bank serving the Blackwood area is also an all-new construction project. The freestanding branch will be built in front of the new ShopRite in Cherrywood Plaza along the Blackwood-Clementon corridor.

Approved earlier this year, the development also includes space for two additional retail tenants that have yet to be announced.

Site preparation has begun, with crews removing pavement, grading the property and installing stormwater management infrastructure. Those are all typical early construction activities that signal the project is moving steadily toward vertical construction in the coming months.
