JACKSON, Tenn. (WBBJ) – One organization is coming together to bless the community in a special way. Students, staff, and attendees gathered Friday outside of Denmark Elementary School to give away free backpacks to the community.
“To be a part of the Denmark community, I grew up right down the road from here to me, it means a lot,” said Cynthia Miller-Chandler, vice president of the Denmark West Alumni Association.
One backpack and one act of kindness at a time. The Denmark West Alumni Association says in light of recent tragedies, the area was in need of hope.

“Even with a tragedy that we can come together, that we can show everyone what Denmark is about,” said Miller-Chandler.
Organizers gave away 48 backpacks stuffed with school supplies, thanks to Clover Creek Missionary Baptist Church and other local donors, but this event is about more than just preparing students for the classroom.
“We thought that it was a need in the community to have a Blessing Box here,” said Miller-Chandler.
The first filling of the free food pantry was a momentous occasion.

“We encourage the community, the churches, anyone that drives by just pull up in the parking lot and see hey, it’s empty, just put something in the box,” said Miller-Chandler.
These backpacks may mark the start of a new school year, but organizers hope this Blessing Box marks the beginning of an even stronger community. The Blessing Box is located at 1945 Denmark-Jackson Road.
