Berlin police were searching for a fugitive suspect on Monday after a 30-year-old man was shot dead near Berlin’s Zoologischer Garten (Zoo) railway station.
The suspect left the scene in a vehicle after the shooting overnight, a spokesman for the Berlin Public Prosecutor’s Office told dpa.
The incident took place on Sunday at around 11:50 pm (2150 GMT) following an argument between several people. The shots are believed to have been fired from within the group.
Paramedics tried to resuscitate the victim, but he died at the scene in the western district of Charlottenburg, police said on X.
The spokesman did not provide details regarding the identities of those involved or the background to the incident. “The investigation is ongoing.”
A homicide unit has launched an investigation, with officers asking the public for assistance and looking for witnesses.
Berlin has seen a recurring pattern of firearm-related incidents.
Early on Sunday, unknown attackers fired shots at a restaurant window in the Neukölln district. The previous weekend, a 38-year-old man was shot in the Schöneberg district.
Germany’s GdP police union called on Monday for new digital tools to be used to counter the increasing use of firearms in crime in the German capital.
“Anyone carrying a firearm and prepared to use it poses a significant danger to society as a whole. Berlin must never become accustomed to seeing and hearing about such incidents,” GdP Berlin chairman Stephan Weh said.
