Danish fashion designers punch far above their weight – the relatively small capital of Copenhagen has an outsized impact on fashion trends across the world. This has long been the case (there are too many “Scandi style” trends to keep track of), but it was especially true as the city celebrated the 20th anniversary of Copenhagen Fashion Week this year. Sure, there were the oversized button-ups that everyone associates with the city‘s style – or, this summer, the swarms of men wearing baggy jeans and flip-flops – because Copenhagen fashion is ultimately about wearability. But there are also more experimental scenes forming: the goth kids lining up outside Alectra Rothschild / MASCULINA’s “Doll Parts (A transsexual Choreography)” or the girl groups forming in real time at the Nicklas Skovgaard show.

If there is one trend to take away from this year’s edition of CPHFW, I would propose it’s this: dancing to live music. While each designer took their collection in different directions, many shows this year featured a performer or band of some sort. There was the Danish recorder virtuoso, Michala Petri, wearing all black at the Anne Sofie Madsen show; the live performances by Grace Ives and local band Haloplus+ at Paolina Russo’s SS27 show; and Nicklas Skovgaard’s own take on a girl band, The Skovgaardettes, for his 13th collection, soundtracked by True Blue, Maya Laner‘s musical project. This energy radiated off the runway and into the major street style moments of the season.
