A fire broke out in an assisted living facility in the Biesdorf district on Tuesday. According to the fire department, a total of eight people were taken to hospital. Seven people sustained minor injuries while one person suffered severe smoke inhalation.

The fire started in an apartment on the top floor of the four-story building and spread to the roof from there. The cause of the fire is still unknown. The fire was largely extinguished by the afternoon, according to the fire department. Final extinguishing and cleanup operations were still underway.

The building is uninhabitable until further notice. The building management (Betreiber) will arrange accommodation for those affected, and the district will also provide emergency shelters. Some residents may be able to stay with friends or relatives.

According to reports, the facility on Arno-Philippsthal-Straße housed elderly people, many with mobility impairments. The number of residents remained unclear.
