Commemorative events, exhibitions and an art installation at the Brandenburg Gate will mark the 65th anniversary of the construction of the Berlin Wall in Berlin on Thursday.

Politicians and other public figures, including Julia Klöckner, President of the Bundestag, are expected to attend the main event at the Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Straße.

In the Chapel of Reconciliation at the memorial, extracts from the biographies of those who lost their lives at the Wall will be read out. A wreath-laying ceremony is also planned.

At the Brandenburg Gate, a 30-metre-long and almost three-metre-high installation has been on display since Tuesday, commemorating the construction of the Wall and the division of the city.

At first glance, the aluminium structure resembles the former, almost insurmountable Wall. Depending on their vantage point, however, visitors can see through it, viewing the other side partly clearly and partly blurred, thereby effectively overcoming the barrier.

At the same time, visitors to the Brandenburg Gate can view an open-air exhibition featuring historical photographs from the era of German division.
