Princess Benedikte wore an elegant cotton floral shirtdress for the event and was watched by Queen Mary of Denmark, who was spotted next to the Princess of Orange in the royal box, filming her husband’s aunt as she drove by in the carriage. Queen Mary wore a mocha-coloured polka-dot silk dress by Diane von Furstenberg, which she paired with a smart gold bracelet and black handbag.

Infanta Elena of Spain represented the House of Bourbon, wearing a blue shirt and floral trousers with a white jacket and a statement rosette brooch, which she paired with a blue clutch bag and an elegant navy fedora. The Duchess of Lugo, who is King Felipe’s sister, has represented her country at the Championships in Aachen a number of times.

Before the opening ceremony commenced, Aachen-Laurensberger Rennverein President Stefanie Peters promised a ‘historic evening’, and the pomp and circumstance most certainly did not disappoint.

‘The visit of these high-ranking royal guests is a great honour,’ she explained. When else do you get to experience so much royal splendour up close?
