NEW BERLIN — A man is in “stable but serious condition” after he became trapped in industrial machinery on Friday morning, according to the New Berlin Fire Department.

At 7:45 a.m. Friday, the fire department was dispatched to 16725 W. Ryerson Road in New Berlin for a report of an adult male trapped in industrial machinery. Upon arrival a few minutes later, crews encountered a “complex machinery entrapment requiring an extended and highly coordinated rescue operation,” with technical rescue resources being requested, according to a news release.

The medical director for the New Berlin Fire Department, who is also a physician at Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin, responded to the scene to assist with advanced medical care during the extrication, according to the release. An additional physician and medical director from Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin was also requested and responded to the scene to provide further medical support. The City of Waukesha Fire Department Special Services Team was requested to provide specialized equipment and personnel for the machinery extrication.

Due to the nature of the patient’s injuries and anticipated medical needs, Wauwatosa Fire Department Med 51 was also requested to the scene. Med 51 is one of the closest Milwaukee County paramedic units equipped with blood administration capabilities, according to the release.

Firefighters, physicians, law enforcement personnel, technical rescue specialists, and the business’s maintenance staff worked together to carefully disassemble and manipulate the industrial equipment while providing continuous medical care to the patient, according to the release.

At 9:21 a.m., the patient was successfully extricated from the machinery. The patient was then transported to an area hospital in stable but serious condition for continued medical care, according to the release.

The New Berlin Fire Department extended its appreciation to the City of Waukesha Fire Department, New Berlin Police Department, Wauwatosa Fire Department, physicians from the Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin, and the business’s staff for their assistance and cooperation throughout the incident.

No additional information regarding the patient’s identity or condition is being released at this time, according to the release.
