Homeless people in Pankow can register to vote directly at a day centre today. The initiative is taking place at the Immanuel Beratung social project’s Prenzlauer Berg day centre, located on Dunckerstrasse.
The pilot project has been introduced by the Pankow electoral office and Diakonie (a social welfare organisation). Diakonie’s staff will be on-site to offer support at the day centre, which sees up to 100 visitors daily.
“We are bringing the election office to where the people we want to reach are. The legal requirements remain in place,” said Marc Albrecht, head of the Pankow district election office.
The Berlin House of Representatives election will take place on September 20, 2026. Ursula Schoen, director of Diakonie, explained, “The right to vote applies regardless of whether a person has a home or not. Access to voting must be practically possible even under difficult living conditions.”
Homeless people can vote in the district where they were located on the 35th day before the election, i.e., on the night of August 15 to 16. It is important to bring an official photo ID.
